  1. Nick you have really been working hard on this its really interesting.Missed seeing your Post on Mykmart and thought I,d look you up.I didn,t realize the amount of very attractive stores that Kmart walked away from. What a Disaster it appears that they closed there newest stores or sold them in 2003 and kept only there proven locations with little intentions of upgrading what was left.NICE JOB NICK. B Conner

  2. The post that was on My Kmart is the Lorain, Kmart Supercenter post on this site. I moved it here when I first started this site. Lately I have been focusing on this blog and have not been on My Kmart in some time. I will be back, but only after I create more new post here. Yes, I have noticed Kmart walking away from their attractive stores firsthand. It seems very foolish for them to let their Supercenter concept wither away slowly. Not just Super Kmart, but all Kmart stores needs to be relaunched (at least in northern Ohio). Thank you for leaving a comment.

  4. According to this article about the closing of the Portage Super Kmart, it says that the building was purchased by Meijer in early January: http://posttrib.suntimes.com/business/10331087-420/portage-kmart-closing-in-april.html

  11. I hope the Super K-Marts rumored to be converted to regular K-Marts aren't true. Super K-Marts are dead and dying; along with regular K-Marts. I'm assuming the same store sales declined following the removal of groceries.

  12. At some Super Kmart stores I have been in the grocery sections were very busy and the rest of the stores were entirely empty. It seems like that is more true at around 1 AM; I was in one late at night ans NOBODY was outside of the grocery department. Those Super Kmart stores also close down the general merchandise entrance around 10 PM. All the remaining Super Kmart grocery areas are supplied by Nash Finch (the ones supplied by others all closed or converted)so if Kmart were to have a dispute with Nash Finch then all the Super Kmart stores would likely convert or close.

I have been hearing worse rumors than those two stores converting, but I am not sure if they are true.

    1. Which Super K-Marts support your claim on the grocery departments being busier than the rest of the store?

      Delete
    2. Well, most of them. When I go to the one in Lorain, Ohio it seems that most people are shopping in the grocery department and leaving with carts full of groceries. Some people have a few items from other departments such as home (close to the grocery area). That store does match business pretty well with the Walmart close to it though. Walmart also shuts down the general merchandise entrance around 10 too.

  13. The Super Kmart in Morgantown, WV is closing in December 2013. There will now be 20 Super K's (all in the Midwest except one in the East Coast in PA which is kinda a midwest state too).
Looks like they've pretty much wiped off all the Super K's in the West and East Coast.

  17. Just an FYI: There were 2 Kmart Super Centers in Detroit. One closed several years ago and is now a Home Depot. The other converted to a "regular" Kmart late 2013. There was also a Super Center in Westland, Michigan. It closed and is now IKEA.

    3. That is right, I helped open the one in Detroit that is now a Home Depot. It was in November of 97 or 98 I think. I just finished at the Bradley, IL one recently. Was there since July 1997. Loved working for Kmart all these years.

  18. Made a road trip to the Ashtabula OH store today, clean, well stocked, most of the activity was senior citizens on the grocery side. I'm from Buffalo NY, cleaner than any Kmart around here. Well stocked, more organized. Prices are great too. I was kinda surprised. My friend and I wanted to see a Super Kmart and Sears Grand before they become a thing of the past. Would second only to our local Wegman's stores in cleanliness and quality. They should just open some stand alone grocery stores.

  20. The Terre Haute, IN location is a Super KMart. KMart announced today that the Madison Heights and Port Huron locations (among others) will be closing. Both of these were Super K's. That leaves Roseville as the last SuperK in Michigan. Michigan is where Kresge, then KMart got it's start and where the Super K concept was concieved. Eddie Lampert will have the company liquated in short order. I sure do feel bad for the affected employees. --Wolverine70.

  21. Hi Anonymous and blog coordinator, The Terre Haute location WAS a SuperKmart for a long while. It's still a Kmart and not on the closing list (as of late September 2014), but is no longer a SuperKmart.

I had plenty of memories being at that store when I was a Sycamore in the mid-90s. I think the SuperKmart opened in 1994. I even had a haircut there at the BoRics! I enjoyed that store much more than SprawlMart.

  24. Here's the exact dates these stores opened:

Bradley, IL opened on February 4, 1994.
Tinley Park, IL opened on February 5, 1996.
East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN opened as a regular Kmart on May 1, 1975 and was converted to a Super Kmart sometime in 2001.
Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN opened as a regular Kmart on August 19, 1971 and was converted to a Super Kmart sometime in 2001.
Madison Heights, MI opened as a regular Kmart on February 26, 1981 and was converted to a Super Kmart sometime in 1997.
Roseville, MI opened on October 1, 1999.
Port Huron, MI opened on November 1, 1993.
Taylor, MI opened as a regular Kmart on March 5, 1964 and was converted to a Super Kmart in the spring of 1999.
Ashtabula, OH opened as a regular Kmart on August, 10 1997 and was converted to a Super Kmart sometime in the late 1990's.
Cambridge, OH opened as a regular Kmart on November 16, 1995 and was converted to a Super Kmart sometime in 2001.
Lorain, OH actually opened on October 25, 1993 (not October 27 like you said).
Mentor, OH opened on April 25, 1994.
Warren, OH opened on August 14, 1995.
Uniontown, PA opened on November 7, 1994.

  26. I work for kmart. The remaining Super Kmarts are having their grocery removed and a wall is going up. The old grocery side will be used for stockroom space or rented out to 3rd party. Everyone on grocery side of the Uniontown PA kmart were just told they will be losing their jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I doubt all of them are converting. I was told by an inside source at least one store was safe from being closed or converted. I know several Super Kmart stores will close later this year and it was my understanding they would close as Super K. Kmart is making deals to sell the remaining Super Kmart stores to massive retailers so the smaller ones are the ones most likely to stay in business. Are you sure all are converting?

  29. I think you might have gotten the Bradley, IL store mixed up with the Chillicothe, OH store. The Kmart store locator lists the Chillicothe store as being open 8am-10pm, whereas the Bradley, IL has normal Super K hours. So I think that Chillicothe switched from SuperCenter to Kfresh, not Bradley.

  30. I wonder why they are converting all of the Super Kmarts. If they convert the remaining ones to K-fresh then no one will ever go. Back then in 2002 and 2003 they closed lots of Super Kmarts out there including Arkansas.

    1. I see you know very little about retail. Grocery stores are very expensive to run. Nearly every Super Kmart lost money in the grocery business. They decided to cut back on product and be smarter with their purchases. I remember one of the workers of a super k telling me about how much food they have to throw out every year and how much they lose due to equipment failure. Hundreds of thousands of dollars!

    2. Yeah, Walmart is better for its Supercenter stores. They've closed 3 regular Walmarts and replaced them with Supercenters. Back then they were 2 Kmarts in Fort Smith AR but they closed the 1801 Zero street one in the 1994 rounds of closures. The last one on 7434 Rogers Avenue which was doing well closed in 2009 due to the lease not being renewed.

    1. Mentor and Warren are the last two that will be open after this. Both are supposedly going to Meijer. The one in Mentor was sold to Meijer and Kmart makes lease payments to Meijer there. Meijer has at least three waves planned for entering Northeastern Ohio; a 2017 one, a 2018 one, and a 2019. Lorain (a closing Super Kmart store) looks to be a 2017 wave store along with another Lorain County store in Avon. The third Lorain County Meijer store on the south side of Elyria looks to be a 2019 store. I am starting to think the Mentor and Warren stores (both current Super Kmarts) are 2018 stores, Macedonia / Northfield is a 2018 store. I know another Meijer is planned for North Canton but I don't know where in North Canton. It makes sense that Warren might have been pushed back a little since the other Youngstown area store they have planned, in Austintown by Walmart, is a 2018 store. Mentor is odd, I don't know of any other Meijer stores being planned on the east side of Cleveland that one would just be out on its own for a while.

    2. I heard a rumor that Kroger bought the land that Super K is on and could be going in over there. Two new Meijer stores so close to each other - Lorain and Avon - seems a tad excessive for "we're entering a new market," but, hey, who knows?

      Delete
    3. Apparently, according to Bing, North Canton is planned for the area near Belden Crossings. Meijer is also planning a store for Canton itself, Bing is mapping a plaza next to Walmart on Atlantic Blvd. (Seems too close to Walmart, I'm guessing something more along the lines of the Kmart that's closing over there.)

  35. Warren's is still there. I think Mentor is too... (It was six months ago.)

  36. WTF is wrong with Kmart? Closing all of their Super Kmart Centers is the death knell for the company, I predict. Sad, really sad. Without their supercenters, I don't even take them seriously as a retailer anymore. Walmart has Walmart Supercenters (3,470 as of March 31, 2016) and Target has Super Targets (239 as of September 2015), but what does Kmart have? 6 Super Kmart Centers which is going to drop to 2 by mid September 2016 and probably to 0 by 2017. They might as well just end the prolonged suffering and call it quits right now.

    1. We had a Super Kmart Center (#4904) in Victoria, Texas from October 1993 to June 2002. (From 1970 to October 1993 we had a small "Kmart" discount store.) It was 24 hours the entire time and the store completely closed in June 2002. It didn't downsize to a "Kmart" discount store or a "Big Kmart." R.I.P. Super Kmart Center (1991 - 2017) How I miss you.

  39. Well, with the Mentor store closing down in December, Warren will be the last Super Kmart. There will be only one left. I'm not sure how long it will last. Hopefully, the Warren store won't close down any time soon, otherwise, it will completely mark the end of the Super Kmart Centers.

    1. Depending on what you consider as Super Kmart, you could actually say (1988 - 2017). Back in 1988 Kmart came up with an idea similar to the Super Kmart we have today with the exception of not having service counters in the grocery section. Those locations went by the name "Super Kmart" rather than Super Kmart Center. There were two test locations in Kankakee, Illinois and Clinton, Iowa.
