Circuit City in High Point, North Carolina

photos by Mike Kalasnik
description by Nicholas Eckhart

This Circuit City at 1030 Mall Loop in High Point, North Carolina opened in 1996. This store was vacated in 2008 and was purchased by High Point University in early 2011 along with the nearby Oak Hollow Mall. The Circuit City sits on a 4 acre plot of land (likely the main reason High Point University bought the store). It is not very clear what the University wants to do with this store and the Mall at this Point. It is very well expected that this Mall is going to die soon and the final nail in the coffin may just be by the University that bought it. Since Sears closed in 2012 only Belk and a Dillard's Clearance Center remain as anchors as of early 2012. If you are interested in reading more about the Oak Hollow Mall there is a post on Sky City about it.

Circuit City in Keene, New Hampshire

photos by John Jewell
description by Nicholas Eckhart

The former Circuit City store in Keene, New Hampshire is located at 41 Ashbrook Road. The store was opened in late October 2005, but was shut down in March 2009 with the last of the Circuit City stores. this store is still vacant and no notable changes except the removal of the Circuit City signage has taken place. In my opinion too many businesses are competing in too small of a town to sustain them all. According to the 2010 Census the town of Keene housed 23409 individuals, which to me does not seem like enough to sustain three major shopping centers. Also in Keene, the Sears Essentials store is one of the 80 closures announced so far.

The Sears Essentials store in Keene, New Hampshire was located at 480 West Street. This Sears was one of the many stores closed by Sears Holdings in 2012. This store is 102,209 square feet and according to the  Sears Realty website the population in a five mile radius is 28,403. This store opened in 1995 as a Kmart store in Keene's Kmart Plaza. The Kmart became Sears Essentials in 2005, at the same time the shopping center which is owned by Heyman Properties became Sears Plaza. This store was one of the first 50 Kmart to Sears conversions to take place. Many other Sears Grand and Essentials stores have been converted back to Kmart. The Sears Grand in Solon, Ohio remains open as the last in a former Kmart.

This Restaurant was located at 6052 East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte, North Carolina. This restaurant was repainted after it closed, similar to other closed YUM brands restaurants. This closed restaurant is 3,152 Square feet and it's lot size is 45,302 Square Feet. According to this restaurant is now being used as a Bus Station. I do not know much about this restaurant, but I know it was opened between 2002 and 2004 and closed in late 2009 or early 2010. The other KFC and A&W combo in Charlotte on South Tryon Street was closed by the health department in 2007. There is also a post on this blog on the closed BJ's Wholesale store next door.

Here is a Bing Maps view of what this restaurant looked like before.

For those who do not know what BJ's is, it is a chain of about 200 Wholesale stores (similar to Costco and Sam's Club) found in states that border the Atlantic coast, Pennsylvania, and in the East Half of Ohio. This BJ's Wholesale store at 6030 East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte, North Carolina was closed January 17th, 2011. The company claims this store along with four others were shuttered since they did not meet sales expectations. This was a 99,792 Square foot store that opened in March 2002. This store is still vacant as of January 2012. There is also a post on this blog on a Closed A&W Root Beer and KFC store next door.

Kmart (formerly Super Kmart) in Greensboro, North Carolina

Description by Nicholas Eckhart
Photos by Mike Kalasnik

This Kmart is a former Super Kmart location at 1302 Bridford Parkway in Greensboro, North Carolina in the Landmark Crossing shopping center. The Super Kmart store was a 1994 Grounds Up build. The store was converted from a Super Kmart store in 2009 and is 173,925 square feet. This Kmart has a Sears Outlet store located in the former grocery section of Super Kmart and a Kmart Express gas station. At one time this store had a Kmart Auto Center. In this store's early days it had a Kmart Cafe. This Kmart Cafe was later changed to a Little Caesar's Pizza Station. This Kmart lost the Little Caesar's restaurant when the grocery section was removed. The Greensboro Ollie's bargain Outlet that I also have a post on is in this same Shopping center.
